Specialist English for lawyers and law students
TOLES means Test of Legal English Skills. Established in Cambridge in 2000, it is designed for international lawyers, law students and legal translators who want evidence of specialised legal-English ability. It focuses on the language used in commercial legal practice rather than general social English or academic law essays.
The main certification path has three levels: Foundation, Higher and Advanced. Foundation targets candidates beginning commercial legal English and recommends general English around A2 or above. Higher expects above-Foundation legal English and general English around B1 or above. Advanced is for candidates with strong commercial legal English and general English around B2+ or higher.

All three are secure, proctored online exams. Foundation and Higher last 90 minutes; Advanced lasts 120 minutes. They test legal vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing through structured questions. The current Foundation paper has 90 questions, Higher has 95 and Advanced has 140.
TOLES content draws heavily on practical commercial-law language: contracts, business structures, banking, litigation, tort, employment, intellectual property, insolvency, landlord and tenant, and alternatives to litigation. Candidates do not need to qualify in English law, but they must learn how common-law concepts and documents are expressed in English.
Results are percentages rather than pass/fail decisions. Band One is 81–100%, Band Two 61–80%, Band Three 41–60% and Band Four 1–40%. The meaning of a band is interpreted at the chosen exam level. A 70% Advanced performance therefore describes a different ability from 70% at Foundation.

TOLES certificates do not expire. This can make them a useful addition to a legal CV, but candidates should not assume universal formal recognition. The official site states that TOLES is not a replacement for a general English qualification. Before registering, check what an employer, university or professional body actually requires and choose the level that provides credible evidence of present legal-English ability.
A practical preparation method
Begin with the free official example for the intended level. Work under time, then classify every error: unfamiliar legal term, collocation, grammar, document structure, common-law concept, misleading option, typing or time management. Record uncertain correct answers too. A percentage alone cannot show which language behaviour should change.
Use five focused sessions each week. Rotate vocabulary, grammar, legal reading, contract language and timed question practice. Keep an active notebook with the term, plain-English meaning, common collocations, contrast with a near-synonym and one authentic sentence. Learn language as lawyers use it in clauses, correspondence and commercial situations—not as disconnected word lists.
Review requires evidence. For multiple-choice questions, explain why the selected option fits the grammar, meaning and professional context and why each distractor fails. For free-text items, check spelling, form, precision and whether the expression is the standard legal collocation. Rewrite difficult sentences in clearer modern legal English without changing legal effect.
Complete a realistic online simulation regularly. Reproduce the intended 90- or 120-minute limit, secure-browser behaviour, typing and proctoring conditions. Use no unauthorised references. Afterwards, separate language problems from interface and concentration problems, correct one pattern, and repeat a related set under time.

Track evidence rather than mood: percentage, accuracy by topic, time per section, repeated grammar errors and vocabulary successfully recalled in context. In the final week, revisit proven material, complete technical checks, confirm identification and appointment details and protect sleep. Official TOLES guidance overrides unofficial shortcuts.
Keep professional usefulness at the centre of study. Ask whether each new expression helps you interpret a clause, explain a legal relationship, draft more clearly or avoid ambiguity. This makes exam preparation valuable beyond the certificate itself.
Quick FAQ
Is TOLES a law-degree examination?
No. It tests specialised legal English, particularly the language used in international commercial legal work.
Does a TOLES certificate expire?
TOLES states that its certificates are valid for life.
Is there a pass mark?
TOLES does not describe the exams as pass/fail. Candidates receive a percentage and a performance band indicating their legal-English level at that exam tier.
