An Eight-Week TOEFL Essentials Study Plan

Diagnose, build, rehearse and consolidate

An eight-week TOEFL Essentials plan works best when it trains the actual task types and ends with rehearsals in the room and on the computer you will use. Start by confirming that your institution accepts TOEFL Essentials and what score it requires, then find your starting point.

Eight-week TOEFL Essentials study plan: map the test, build, rehearse at home, final check

Before Week 1: diagnostic

Take a full practice test under timed conditions. Record your results by task type and save your writing and speaking responses. Classify errors: vocabulary, word order, missed details, register, instructions or time.

Week 1: map the test

Learn every task type:

  • Listening: Listen and Reply; Listen to a Conversation; Academic Listening: Announcements; Academic Listening: Talks.
  • Reading: Vocabulary; General Reading: Daily Life; Academic Reading: Tables; Academic Reading: Passages.
  • Writing: Build a Sentence; Write an Email; Describe a Photo or Write for an Academic Discussion.
  • Speaking: Read Aloud; Listen and Repeat; Virtual Interview.
  • Personal Video Statement: two unscored questions.

Start a vocabulary notebook (synonyms, word families, everyday and academic words) and an error log.

Weeks 2–3: build foundations

  • Vocabulary: 15 minutes a day on synonyms and word families; the Vocabulary task asks for the most similar word.
  • Reading: one Daily Life text and one Academic Table a day.
  • Listening: short dialogues and announcements with one-sentence summaries.
  • Writing: ten Build a Sentence items a day; one short email every other day.
  • Speaking: daily shadowing and reading dialogue lines aloud.

Weeks 4–5: task control

  • Timed sets for each section.
  • Alternate Describe a Photo posts and Academic Discussion posts, since your test includes one of them.
  • Five-question Virtual Interview practice on a new topic three times a week.
  • Pick one grammar and one vocabulary target from your error log each week.

Weeks 6–7: full rehearsals at home

Take a full practice test each week at the time of day you have booked, in your test room, using only a whiteboard or transparency sheet for notes and no breaks. Record a practice Personal Video Statement: 30 seconds to prepare and 2 minutes to respond for each question.

Week 8: consolidate and check logistics

  • Repeat your weakest task types in short sets.
  • Run the ETS Secure Browser Equipment Check again and prepare your room.
  • Confirm your identification matches your registration name.
  • Keep sessions short and protect sleep before test day.

A weekly rhythm

Five focused sessions and one light review day. Each session should produce something you can check: corrected answers, a rewritten email, a recording, or an updated error log.

Quick FAQ

Is eight weeks enough? It depends on the gap between your diagnostic result and your target score.

Should I prepare for both writing options? Yes. Your test includes either Describe a Photo or Write for an Academic Discussion, not both, and you won’t know which in advance.
