Verbal ability and verbal reasoning describe how effectively you understand, analyse and use written language. They are tested in education, recruitment and professional selection because many roles require people to draw sound conclusions from complex information.

Core skills

  • Reading accurately under time pressure.
  • Identifying main claims and supporting evidence.
  • Making inferences without adding unsupported assumptions.
  • Understanding vocabulary, relationships and tone.
  • Comparing statements and evaluating conclusions.

Common question types

Tasks may include reading comprehension, true/false/cannot-say decisions, sentence completion, analogies, vocabulary relationships, paragraph organisation and critical-reasoning questions. Formats differ, so always follow the instructions for the assessment you are taking.

Verbal knowledge versus reasoning

Vocabulary helps you access the text, but reasoning asks what follows from it. A strong answer must be supported by the information provided, not by what is generally true or what you personally believe.

A reliable method

  1. Read the question and identify the exact decision required.
  2. Locate the relevant sentence or relationship.
  3. Separate stated facts from implications.
  4. Eliminate answers that add, distort or reverse information.
  5. Check the final answer against the wording of the question.

How to improve

Practise untimed first and explain why each option is right or wrong. Track errors by cause: vocabulary, misreading, unsupported inference, logic or time pressure. Then introduce timing gradually. Build vocabulary through active recall and spaced repetition.
