The 1–6 scale, CEFR levels and the 0–120 comparison
Since January 2026, TOEFL iBT scores are reported on a 1–6 scale aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Many universities still describe requirements on the older 0–120 scale, so for a two-year transition score reports show both. Here is how to read your score and compare it with a requirement.

What your score report shows
During the transition period, your report includes:
- your CEFR level;
- 1–6 section scores for Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, plus a 1–6 overall score;
- a comparable 0–120 overall score.
Scores use half-point steps. The overall score is the average of the four section scores, rounded to the nearest half band. For example, a section average of 5.25 gives an overall score of 5.5.
1–6 scores and CEFR levels
| TOEFL iBT score | CEFR level |
|---|---|
| 6 | C2 |
| 5–5.5 | C1 |
| 4–4.5 | B2 |
| 3–3.5 | B1 |
| 2–2.5 | A2 |
| 1–1.5 | A1 |
The same alignment applies to the overall score and to each section.
Comparing with a 0–120 requirement
Each 1–6 score covers a range of the old 0–120 scale, and the comparable 0–120 score on your report represents the midpoint of that range. ETS publishes full comparison tables for organisations. If a university lists a 0–120 requirement, compare it with the comparable score on your report and check whether it also sets minimum section scores.
When and how you get scores
- Unofficial Reading and Listening scores appear at the end of the test. At a test centre, you can then choose to report or cancel your scores.
- Official scores are available in your ETS account 3 days after your test date.
- PDF score reports are ready to download 1 day after your electronic scores.
How long scores are valid
TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years from the test date.
Setting a target
- Check each institution’s current requirement, including section minimums.
- Allow a margin. Aim a little above the minimum, because scores vary between sittings.
- Plan by section. If Writing or Speaking is your weakest score, give it proportionally more time.

Quick FAQ
Is a 1–6 score worse than a 0–120 score? No. They are different scales describing the same performance. Use the CEFR level and the comparable 0–120 score to relate them.
My university still says “90 out of 120”. What do I do? Compare that figure with the comparable 0–120 score on your report and confirm with the university during the transition.
