IELTS Academic Test Day, Results, Re-marks and One Skill Retake

Protect your score from avoidable problems

A strong IELTS Academic result depends on more than English. Booking the wrong mode, bringing the wrong identification or misreading your results options can cost time and money. This guide covers the practical steps before, during and after the test.

IELTS Academic test day, results and One Skill Retake

Before you book

Confirm these points with every organisation you plan to apply to:

  • that it accepts IELTS Academic for your purpose;
  • which delivery modes it accepts (paper, computer or IELTS Online);
  • the overall band and any minimum band for each skill;
  • whether it accepts a result that includes One Skill Retake;
  • your deadline, so you can choose a mode whose results arrive in time.

On test day

  • Bring the same identification document you used when you booked. If you bring a different document, you may not be allowed to take the test.
  • Arrive early. For IELTS Online, allow extra time to log in; if you are late, you might not be allowed to take the test.
  • Leave personal belongings outside the test room and switch off your phone and other electronic devices. Watches are not allowed in the test room.
  • Water is allowed if it is in a clear, transparent bottle.
  • Check your booking confirmation for the time and place of every part of the test, including Speaking.

Getting your results

Delivery mode Results available
IELTS on computer 1–5 days (IELTS reports most within two days)
IELTS Online 6–8 days
IELTS on paper Up to 13 days

You receive a Test Report Form, on paper or as an electronic Test Report Form. IELTS Online results come as an electronic form only. You can send results to organisations through the IELTS Results Service, and organisations can verify results there. IELTS Online results can only be shared officially through this e-delivery service.

Understanding your score

Each skill receives a band score from 1 to 9, in whole or half bands, and the overall band is the average of the four. For a full explanation of how bands are calculated and rounded, read our guide to the IELTS band score system.

If your score is lower than expected

Request a re-mark. Through an Enquiry on Results, senior examiners re-mark your test. You pay an enquiry fee, which is fully refunded if your band score changes, and you receive a new Test Report Form if it does. A re-mark result can be available on the same day as your application and up to 21 days after it. Ask your test centre for its application deadline.

Book One Skill Retake. If one skill held you back, you may be able to retake just that skill. You must meet all of these conditions:

  • your full test was IELTS on computer, at a centre that offers One Skill Retake;
  • you take the retake within 60 days of your full test;
  • you have not already used a retake for that test, because each full test allows only one.

You receive a new Test Report Form with the retake score and your original scores for the other three skills, and you can choose whether to use the original or the new form. Retake results arrive within 3–5 days. One Skill Retake is available for IELTS Academic and General Training and is accepted by UK Visas and Immigration, but other organisations decide for themselves, so check before booking.

Take the full test again if several skills fall short or your target organisation does not accept One Skill Retake.

How long results are valid

IELTS recommends that a result shows your English ability for up to two years. Organisations can choose to accept older results, so check each organisation’s own rule.

Choosing your next step

  • One band short in a single skill after a computer test? Consider a re-mark if the result surprises you, or One Skill Retake if you know that skill needs more work.
  • Several skills short? Plan focused preparation and a full retest.
  • Close to a deadline? Choose the option whose results timeline fits.

Quick FAQ

Can I retake one skill after a paper test? Not normally. One Skill Retake requires a full IELTS on computer test. Candidates who need special arrangements should contact their test centre.

Will a re-mark lower my score? Senior examiners re-mark the test, and a new Test Report Form is issued if the band changes. Consider carefully before applying.

Does IELTS have a pass mark? No. Each organisation sets the scores it requires.

Accuracy note (14 September 2026): results timings, re-mark deadlines, fees and One Skill Retake availability vary by location and can change. Confirm the current rules with your test centre and each receiving organisation.
