TOLES Scores, Bands and Certificates

Interpret a percentage at the correct level

All three main TOLES exams report results as a percentage and issue a certificate with an explanation of the relevant score band. TOLES is not described as a pass/fail assessment. The result shows performance at the chosen level at the time of testing.

Band One, 81–100%, represents excellent legal-English skills at that exam tier. Band Two, 61–80%, indicates very good skills. Band Three, 41–60%, indicates satisfactory skills, while Band Four, 1–40%, is less than satisfactory. The wording is shared, but the competence described differs between Foundation, Higher and Advanced.

A percentage must therefore retain its level label. An 85% Foundation certificate shows excellent command of Foundation requirements and readiness to progress; it does not claim Advanced drafting ability. A 65% Advanced result reflects much more demanding language even though it sits in Band Two.

TOLES states that online results are sent by email within seven business days and the hard-copy certificate is sent within 30 days. Certificates do not expire and are valid for life. Candidates should nevertheless present the exam level, date, percentage and band transparently on a CV.

Score review is available under current candidate rules. A request must be made within 28 days of receiving the score, and TOLES lists a fee that is refunded if the review upgrades the score band. Because most questions are multiple choice, the official guidance notes that incorrect level choice is more common than marking error.

Candidates can retake an exam without a mandatory waiting period, but immediate repetition without study is unlikely to change the result substantially. Use the band description and error analysis to decide whether to rebuild the current level or progress.

Recognition is practical rather than universal statutory licensing. TOLES says many law firms, companies and banks value the certificate, but candidates should check the intended employer or institution. It supplements general English and legal qualifications; it does not replace them where separately required.

A practical preparation method

Begin with the free official example for the intended level. Work under time, then classify every error: unfamiliar legal term, collocation, grammar, document structure, common-law concept, misleading option, typing or time management. Record uncertain correct answers too. A percentage alone cannot show which language behaviour should change.

Use five focused sessions each week. Rotate vocabulary, grammar, legal reading, contract language and timed question practice. Keep an active notebook with the term, plain-English meaning, common collocations, contrast with a near-synonym and one authentic sentence. Learn language as lawyers use it in clauses, correspondence and commercial situations—not as disconnected word lists.

Review requires evidence. For multiple-choice questions, explain why the selected option fits the grammar, meaning and professional context and why each distractor fails. For free-text items, check spelling, form, precision and whether the expression is the standard legal collocation. Rewrite difficult sentences in clearer modern legal English without changing legal effect.

Complete a realistic online simulation regularly. Reproduce the intended 90- or 120-minute limit, secure-browser behaviour, typing and proctoring conditions. Use no unauthorised references. Afterwards, separate language problems from interface and concentration problems, correct one pattern, and repeat a related set under time.

Track evidence rather than mood: percentage, accuracy by topic, time per section, repeated grammar errors and vocabulary successfully recalled in context. In the final week, revisit proven material, complete technical checks, confirm identification and appointment details and protect sleep. Official TOLES guidance overrides unofficial shortcuts.

Keep professional usefulness at the centre of study. Ask whether each new expression helps you interpret a clause, explain a legal relationship, draft more clearly or avoid ambiguity. This makes exam preparation valuable beyond the certificate itself.

Is there a pass mark?

TOLES does not describe the exams as pass/fail. Candidates receive a percentage and a performance band indicating their legal-English level at that exam tier.
