Produce precise legal English under pressure
TOLES Advanced is the third and highest level in the main certification path. It is a secure, proctored online examination lasting 120 minutes. The current format contains 12 sections and 140 questions: 110 multiple-choice and 30 free-text answers typed by the candidate.
The exam is intended for candidates with strong commercial legal English and general English at upper-intermediate or advanced level, approximately B2+. It assesses sophisticated vocabulary, grammar, register and the ability to work accurately under significant time pressure.

Advanced covers real court cases, banking, contracts, business structures, insolvency, disputes and litigation, landlord and tenant, tort, negligence and nuisance, employment law, intellectual property, alternatives to litigation and common-law principles. The emphasis is language for real commercial documents and professional situations rather than abstract legal theory.
Study modern contract drafting. Practise obligation, discretion, prohibition, condition and exception; defined terms and cross-references; representations and warranties; remedies, termination, assignment, governing law and dispute resolution. Compare a dense traditional clause with a clearer version and identify whether the legal effect remains unchanged.
Register matters. Advanced candidates should recognise inappropriate informality, unnecessary archaism, ambiguity and overlong structures. Plain legal English does not mean casual English. It means precise organisation and wording that a professional reader can apply efficiently.
Free-text questions require exact recall, spelling and form. Build active retrieval through gap sentences, clause completion and short drafting exercises. Do not prepare only by recognising options. The 30 typed responses expose vocabulary that is familiar but not genuinely available.

With 140 questions in 120 minutes, timing must be practised. Some items deserve close clause analysis, while others should be answered quickly. Use official examples to build section checkpoints. A high Advanced band provides strong evidence of specialist legal-English performance, but it remains a language certificate rather than a licence to practise law or proof of knowledge in every jurisdiction.
A practical preparation method
Begin with the free official example for the intended level. Work under time, then classify every error: unfamiliar legal term, collocation, grammar, document structure, common-law concept, misleading option, typing or time management. Record uncertain correct answers too. A percentage alone cannot show which language behaviour should change.
Use five focused sessions each week. Rotate vocabulary, grammar, legal reading, contract language and timed question practice. Keep an active notebook with the term, plain-English meaning, common collocations, contrast with a near-synonym and one authentic sentence. Learn language as lawyers use it in clauses, correspondence and commercial situations—not as disconnected word lists.
Review requires evidence. For multiple-choice questions, explain why the selected option fits the grammar, meaning and professional context and why each distractor fails. For free-text items, check spelling, form, precision and whether the expression is the standard legal collocation. Rewrite difficult sentences in clearer modern legal English without changing legal effect.
Complete a realistic online simulation regularly. Reproduce the intended 90- or 120-minute limit, secure-browser behaviour, typing and proctoring conditions. Use no unauthorised references. Afterwards, separate language problems from interface and concentration problems, correct one pattern, and repeat a related set under time.
Track evidence rather than mood: percentage, accuracy by topic, time per section, repeated grammar errors and vocabulary successfully recalled in context. In the final week, revisit proven material, complete technical checks, confirm identification and appointment details and protect sleep. Official TOLES guidance overrides unofficial shortcuts.

Keep professional usefulness at the centre of study. Ask whether each new expression helps you interpret a clause, explain a legal relationship, draft more clearly or avoid ambiguity. This makes exam preparation valuable beyond the certificate itself.
Quick FAQ
Is TOLES a law-degree examination?
No. It tests specialised legal English, particularly the language used in international commercial legal work.
Does a TOLES certificate expire?
TOLES states that its certificates are valid for life.
Is there a pass mark?
TOLES does not describe the exams as pass/fail. Candidates receive a percentage and a performance band indicating their legal-English level at that exam tier.
